And the main problem is that the amount of fuel on board the satellite is limited. The devices are equipped with low-power electrostatic engines that operate on the Hall effect. To create thrust, they need a working medium — krypton gas. The satellite cannot use up all its reserves. It must have an "emergency reserve" in order to be able to avoid a collision with another body in orbit. And the satellite also needs "retirement savings" — a reserve of fuel for deorbiting. When krypton reserves reach a critical value, the engines send the satellite to burn up in the atmosphere. So that it does not remain in orbit and does not turn into dangerous (for other spacecraft) debris.

The expected service life of a Starlink satellite in the v.1.0 configuration is 8 years. This is in ideal conditions, if you don't have to maneuver a lot. And you don't have to spend a lot of b2b email list fuel to get to your workplace.

Using Starship allows you to dramatically increase the expected service life of each satellite. Currently, Falcon 9 delivers a package of 60 devices to one point. And then they themselves disperse. Starship is a reusable spacecraft. Unlike the last stage of Falcon 9, it can be refueled. That is, Starship can deliver each of the 400 satellites on board to exactly the right point. So that they do not waste precious krypton. And then Starship will return, refuel with kerosene and liquid oxygen, take on board new "passengers" and carry out the next mission.


High risk of failure
It looks beautiful and easy only on paper. In real life, everything is much more complicated. SpaceX Starship is a very ambitious project. Elon Musk “crashed” only the first two prototypes of his Falcon 9. Other launches were successful. And of the first 20 Starship tests, only 12 ended in success. Three times the result was a “partial success”, the rocket itself exploded very beautifully. The other 5 tests ended in failure.
