In the same year, WooCommerce , the most popular WordPress eCommerce plugin , was acquired by Automattic (the company founded by WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg).

In 2016, WordPress 4.5 , 4.6 and 4.7 were released. Each version brought some new features and improvements. The most notable changes this year were streamlined updates for plugins and themes, content restoration by using browser storage and the custom CSS feature for the theme customizer. Towards the end of the year, WordPress.org announced active support for HTTPs .

In 2017, WordPress 4.8 and 4.9 were released. These versions brought several new standard widgets for adding audio, video, images, gallery, rich text and HTML. These versions also laid the foundation for the new WordPress block editor.

In 2019, WordPress began implementing the Site Health project into core. With WordPress 5.1 and 5.2, Site Health began showing notifications to users when an older PHP version was detected.

Additionally, protection against the White Screen of Death has been improved, allowing users to securely log in in the event of a critical error and then resolve the error from the WordPress dashboard.

In 2020, the WordPress community faced unexpected challenges due to the outbreak of a global pandemic . WordCamp events around the globe were cancelled and the community organized virtual meetups.

Fortunately, many members of the WordPress community and developers were familiar and accustomed to remote work. Development continued, and three major WordPress versions were released (5.4 , 5.5 and 5.6 ).
