The repertoire of Russian online cinemas has decreased by only 6.5% since the beginning of the year, to 29 thousand titles, according to calculations by the TelecomDaily agency (Izvestia has reviewed the data).
The falling content, after the film libraries with American films in the Russian Federation thinned by 30-60%, was partially replaced by films from Korea, China and India, cameroon phone number list analysts believe. But they are not watched like Hollywood: they are far from the Russian mentality and tastes. Originals are much more promising, experts note. Russian content for online cinemas will make a full statement next year, when films currently in production hit the screens, experts add.
From the beginning of 2022 to November 1, the number of films and TV series in Russian online cinemas decreased by about 6.5% - from 31.8 thousand to 29.7 thousand, according to a presentation by the TelecomDaily agency, which Izvestia has reviewed. The overall reduction in the repertoire against the backdrop of the departure of Western majors and the removal of their products from film libraries is relatively small - 30-60% of American films and TV series have disappeared from online cinemas, the authors of the report emphasize.
With the departure of American majors, cinemas began to replace their films and series with content from China, India, South Korea, but it does not match the level of films from the United States - people do not watch Asian films in such quantities, notes TelecomDaily CEO Denis Kuskov. Now online cinemas can attract viewers with their projects - we can assume that 2023 will be a record year for the volume of domestic content, he believes. Russian cinema is more in line with the mentality, tastes and preferences of our audience, explains Denis Kuskov.
— For now, originals are what can differentiate online cinemas from each other with a diminishing repertoire. Companies are trying to attract viewers by launching content in various segments: comedies, detectives, etc. They need to be released constantly so that people do not leave and regularly pay for a subscription, — the expert reasons.
According to his calculations, 100–200 premieres per year could fill the content gap.
The online cinemas surveyed by Izvestia do not say how much the repertoire of American films and TV series has shrunk and how much the Russian one has grown. But their representatives admit that interest in media products from the Russian Federation is growing.
