The Almere city council has conducted a small test to have council members advise their own supporters. They will assess the proposal and provide substantive feedback. In addition to involving citizens more closely in local politics, it also saves time for the council member. Reading documents is the biggest time-consuming task for council members. By relieving them of this burden, they can better spend their time on physical contact with citizens and their supporters.
Several municipalities are also using a new voting test for the 2014 municipal elections. With DeStemVan , a tool that I am helping to develop, citizens can not only fill out a questionnaire to receive voting advice. They can also submit their own ideas for their municipality and vote on the suggestions of others.
