What is cyberstalking?
CEO of cloud provider Nubes Vasily Stepanenko explained that social networks are a potential tool for stalking, since profile photos can be used to determine a person’s social circle, and messengers can be used to identify a person’s location. Angara Security brand protection expert Maria Mikhailova believes that, in addition to social networks, other resources provide a lot of information for cyberstalkers: universities publish lists of applicants, companies talk about their employees, etc.

"There are bots that help aggregate information about a person for money, including information leaked to the Internet, such as car numbers, addresses for receiving goods via delivery, e-mail, mobile phone number, etc.," explained Vasily Stepanenko. Maria Mikhailova said that after receiving personal data, the attacker can disclose the data on publicly available resources and create pages that look like the victim.

Vasily Stepanenko also named photographing the victim and publishing the photos on the Internet for intimidation as one of the types of cyberstalking.

Maria Mikhailova added that stalkers can create fake profiles to monitor the victim on social networks, leave comments, and write personal messages.

Head of the Information Security Department at iTPROTECT Kai Mikhailov added that in some cases, stalkers steal passwords and other information. With certain manipulations, stalkers can gain authorized access to both messengers and the camera of personal devices, such as a laptop.
