The verb "to be", I think it is very clear, it means "to exist", "to have a reality" or "to be in a state".
The word "bad" means that there is a defect or it represents a defect. When we say that something is bad, well it has a defect, it is not good. Bad is the opposite of good. Something bad has little or no value, it has no value, it is not good.
The word "hair", for animals, is fur, it's what's on the body of animals. We talk about dog hair, cat hair. So, it's what's soft on their skin and protects them from the cold.
