If you are a European content creator or work for a brand that does business in Europe, a recent Directive passed by the European Parliament could have a major impact on the content you publish on a daily basis. The point to watch is Article 17, called Article 13 in the draft.
On 15 April 2019, Article 17, drafted as Article 13, was approved by the European Parliament. It presents the latest European Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market. What is significant about Article 17? Its name may give us a clue as to what the European Parliament is trying to do, namely to try to unite the Member States of the European Union under one set of laws that applies to all , just as they have already done with the GDPR . In 2001, the EU passed its last piece of copyright legislation : since then, three years before the launch of Facebook, the Internet has changed dramatically.
What is Article 17 (13)?
This directive, aimed at putting all copyright legislation into a single list of fiji consumer email framework, is causing quite a stir among content creators. As Econsultancy summarizes , “ content sharing services must license copyrighted material from the owners . If they fail to do so, the company can be held liable.”
