How did the name Amazon come about?

Post by tasmih1234 »

How it began
Jeff Bezos was still working on Wall Street in the 1990s, but quickly realized that the then-new Internet was the future. He read a report on the expected growth of selling products on the Internet and knew: If I don't do something with this, I'll regret it. He made a list of twenty products he could sell online and eventually chose an online bookstore. Literature was in high demand worldwide, books could be purchased cheaply, and the number of available titles was huge. With financial help from his parents, who invested a quarter of a million dollars, Bezos got to work on his startup. In November 1994, he registered the URL Amazon.com and by July 1995, the site was online. From his garage, Bezos ran his online bookstore.

The name Amazon was not Bezos' first choice. A few months earlier, he registered his company under the name Cadabra, but abandoned it because people on the phone often heard "cadaver. Moreover, his lawyer slovenia mobile numbers list thought the reference to magic was too obscure. Bezos then changed the name of his company to Relentless, which means "ruthless. That name didn't give the right feeling either, though Bezos kept the URL. You are still directed to Amazon.com via Relentless.com. Bezos also registered domain names such as Awake.com, Browse.com and Bookmall.com, none of which stuck.

The importance of a strong brand name
Bezos was immediately aware of the importance of a strong brand name. To a journalist, he once said, "There's nothing about our business model that can't be copied. McDonald's has also been copied, yet it has grown into a billion-dollar company. Much of that is due to the brand name. And brand names are even more important online than in the physical world."
