Google has been following the motto "mobile first" for some time, and what applies to websites also applies to emails and newsletters. Newsletter recipients today expect emails to be flexible and adapt to their individual circumstances. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict where your recipients will read the emails. At work, at home on the PC, or perhaps quickly on the train? Preferences will certainly vary. In addition, there are many email users who not only use a fixed device to access their emails, but also access their emails on a desktop or smartphone depending on the situation. The solution for this is called Responsive Email Design (REMD for short). This means that the design reacts to the circumstances, such as the screen size or the browser, and adapts accordingly. The proportion of mobile use can be well over 50 percent, depending on the industry and target group. Since additional components such as loading times, lighting conditions and other disruptive factors have to be taken into account, the “mobile first” approach for emails should be followed – even if mobile usage is lower among your own target group.

When optimizing, functionality and usability must not be neglected. Simply displaying the newsletter smaller is not an option, as it would no longer be optimally readable on a mobile phone. So you need a design that dynamically adapts to the available size. With a responsive email design, there is no rigid framework and fixed sizes; rather, images scale with the page, columns break flexibly according to predefined rules, and some content disappears or changes.

However, size is not the only factor in optimization. Changing user habits must also be taken into account. When using mobile devices, recipients spend less time on each email. Content should therefore be short and concise and structured as specifically as possible. To create the best newsletter, you need to work on both the presentation and the content.
