With that in mind, Perot came to The Browser Company. One of Arc’s most notable features is that it combines bookmarks and tabs. The app is launched by clicking an icon in the sidebar, just like on iOS or Android. When users navigate to another page, they don’t have to close the tab; it simply waits in the background until needed again. Arc manages its background performance so that it doesn’t use too much memory. Instead of opening Gmail in a tab, users just… open Gmail.
Build, beta, analysis, build
There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on at Arc, but it’s something that can’t be shared. All the employees (about 100 people!) are sworn to secrecy. Miller is clearly worried that bigger players will quickly copy his new ideas. So far, he’s only posted a few tweets, which show that the browser looks very different from Chrome, making Arc’s apps look like desktop apps. It also shows off the ability to rename tabs. Overall, the main goal of the project is to make using the web browser more enjoyable from all sides.
All new features are the result of endless prototyping within the iran number data company. That’s the core product strategy: come up with an idea, build it, test it, and see what happens. In his first few months at the company, Agrawal was eager to make that happen. He and his team took the existing infrastructure of the internet—from Chromium to encryption to multi-tenant technologies—and created a tool that lets you iterate and build features in a day or two, not months. But the team wants to stay ahead of the product developers by making sure the foundation is solid before building on it.
a lot of faith in the overall idea, but Browser believes it’s worth it in the long run. “Large companies tend to have the resources to be able to invest in things that aren’t features, like developer tools,” says Victoria Kirst, a software engineer at Browser who was previously a developer on the Chrome team. “But if you do it right—which a lot of large companies don’t—you can give yourself flexibility. That’s exactly what you need in a startup.”
Browser of the future
Plus, the future is still a bit uncertain. Miller has a lot of ideas, but he always tries to be cautious about evaluating them, saying it's too early or just speculation. Everyone at The Browser Company swears they don't have a master plan or a big roadmap. They have a lot of ideas, a base from which they can develop very quickly, and a fondness for prototypes.
“You can’t just think of a good idea and build a better Internet browser,” Perot says. “You have to experience it, show it to people, and make them react.”
