It is quite difficult to describe the whole variety of affiliate programs in two sentences. Therefore, let us consider the main categories of affiliate programs depending on the type of payment, available to Internet users today.

Type 1. Pay per click

Type 2. With payment for impressions
Here the partner places an advertisement of a certain size on his site, and the contractor pays a reward for those who viewed it. In theory, this looks very attractive, especially for those sites that have a lot of unique visitors per day. But at the same time, 10 thousand views bring in about $5.

As a result, less effort is required, but only very popular sites can earn money from affiliate programs in this way.

Type 3. Pay-per-action
This type of affiliate program is more complicated than the previous two, but it also involves higher payment. Here, the reward is provided only if the user performs some action: registers, answers questionnaire questions, watches a video, downloads a file.

Of course, the more complex the action, the higher the reward, but in this case, not everyone will want to do more than just click on the link.

Type 4. With payment for sales
The most perfect and profitable way to conclude a partnership agreement. Despite this, this method has an obvious drawback: you need to not only attract a visitor to the contractor's site, but also make him buy something there, and this is often quite difficult to do, unless you think through something like an advertising campaign in advance.

At the same time, the project that is trying to get new clients in this way is ready to pay up to 40% of each purchase, if it does not end up in the red. And the whole point is that if the partner had not brought the buyer, there would be no deal. In this case, his merit in the contractor's profit is obvious.

The most effective and profitable way is to enter into a partnership agreement. However, this method has an obvious disadvantage. It is necessary not only to attract the user to the contractor's website, but also to push him to purchase, which is often difficult to do unless you think through something like an advertising campaign in advance.

At the same time, the project that uses this method to attract new customers is ready to pay up to 40% of each purchase, if it does not go into the red. And the whole point is that the deal would not have taken place if the partner had not brought the client. Here it is obvious that the contractor earned money thanks to the partner.

It should be noted that everyone knows the method of payment for sales, it can often be found in real life. But it is much easier and more effective to conduct such activities on the Internet.

Of course, attracting customers (who can buy both goods and certain services) is a more complicated process compared to placing a banner and waiting for a reaction from visitors. But if you approach the issue of attracting customers wisely, you can get not just people who will make a one-time purchase, but regular loyal customers. In this case, the contractor will pay a commission percentage for each order from the client, even if he visited the site on his own.
