Education and training of personnel are becoming key factors for the successful implementation of ambitious projects and maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly changing economy. Marina Petrochenko, Director of the Civil Engineering Institute of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, spoke about how this process is taking place in Russia. At the 2024 Summer BIM Forum, she shared the institute's experience in training BIM specialists and described goals for the near future.
Competencies of specialists of the future
The St. Petersburg Polytechnic University's Civil Engineering Institute ranks first in Russia in the construction field according to the RAEX rating. This recognition was achieved thanks to innovative approaches to training and following the trends of the modern construction industry: BIM, artificial intelligence, additive and robotic technologies, modular construction, etc.
“Understanding these trends, we are trying to prepare specialists for tomorrow,” Marina Petrochenko emphasized.
Therefore, the profile of a graduate of the Civil Engineering Institute and the set of his competencies are constantly changing, including under the influence of the following factors:
The speed of technological development
Knowledge becomes outdated very quickly, so the Institute teaches students the technologies of tomorrow.
Generation gap
Experienced professionals often lack digital skills, while young graduates lack professional experience.
Low level of digital maturity of companies
Young professionals often cannot find work in companies that match their level of training.
Personnel shortage
The shortage of specialists in the labour market has been discussed more than once at various professional events.
The need for import substitution
There is still demand for foreign solutions, which not all companies are ready to give up.
