As a side note, if you are using HHVM (HipHop Virtual Machine) to process PHP, you should be aware that ionCube loader does not support HHVM.
However, this is a moot point as HHVM ended support for PHP as of v3.30. Therefore, this is only relevant if you are using an older version of HHVM. If you are still using HHVM and need to encrypt PHP files with ionCube, then you will need to switch to a more standard PHP engine that supports ionCube.
Preparing for Installation
To complete the manual installation of the ionCube loader it is a good idea to be comfortable with common terminal commands . If you are already familiar with the terminal, feel free to skip to the next section.
In this guide we refer to the following terminal commands:
cat – Send the contents of a file to the terminal.
cd – Change the current working directory.
cp – Copies one or more files.
echo – Send a message to the terminal.
grep – Powerful text-based search.
head – Output the first few lines of a file(s).
ls – List files and directories.
mkdir – Create a new directory.
nano – Compact text editor inside the terminal window.
ssh – Create a new remote SSH connection.
tar – Extract files from a compressed archive.
wget – Download files over HTTP.

If you’re a Kinsta client, you can enable the ionCube loader in MyKinsta. To enable the ionCube loader, go to Sites > Tools > ionCube Loader , and press the “Enable” button. At this time, the ionCube loader can only be enabled on sites using PHP 7.4 or 8.1 (ionCube is not compatible with PHP 8.0). ionCube is free for Kinsta clients and can be installed on any plan .
